VIBRANT LEARNING COMMUNITY

A great school is by its very nature a 'Vibrant learning Community'. In consultation with our educational stakeholders, we have identified and are committed to six core attributes that foster a great school.

PILLARS OF EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE

A professional educator possesses the knowledge and skills to design both the instruction and the environment for enhanced learning and engagement. Pillars of educational practice include: 1) Curriculum; 2) Instruction; 3) Assessment; and 4) Managing the social and emotional learning environment.

FAMILY OF SCHOOLS

The FOS organizational design supports school development and professional learning in the North Vancouver School District. Each FOS includes a full continuum of schools from elementary to a community high school with a complement of support staff.

DISTRICT PLAN

The district plan articulates the school district’s priority areas to Enhance Student Learning. In each area of priority, goals are informed by consultation with respective departments, educational research, stakeholder input, and school plans.

SCHOOL PLANS

School plans are the result of a collaborative planning process whereby the school community identifies strengths of their school and areas for further development. The implementation of the school plan focuses on areas to enhance student learning and engagement.

RESOURCES

We have developed key web-based resources to support the professional learning of educators. Each web-based design is in continuous development and serves as a guide for practice.

Values and Vision
- Begins with an understanding of classroom and school strengths
- Reflects and builds on the shared values of the district, school, and community
- Supports a school-wide focus on diversity, student engagement and learning
- Highlights and values current practice while identifying areas for focused development
- Reflects school-wide commitment to continuous improvement and life-long learning
Engagement and Learning
- Encompasses the core goals of public schooling: intellectual, human and social, and career development.
- Provides a clear focus on the development of educational practice:
  - Curriculum Design
  - Instructional Differentiation
  - Assessment For, As and Of Learning
  - Social Emotional Learning
- Plans for Student Diversity with particular consideration of students of Aboriginal ancestry, children in care and students with special needs
Collaboration, Communication and Community
- Values a collaborative process that involves educational partners in frank, rich and respectful dialogue
- Considers connections with school, community, Family of Schools and district Professional Learning Opportunities
- Includes priorities/goals, actions, and progress monitoring
- Enables a multi-year school plan, published as a living document that is reviewed, refined and reported on annually to the school’s community
